Though it seems like just yesterday we were gawking over the resolution of standard HDTVs, the latest TVs on the market are now capable of four times that resolution. Aptly named “4K”, the latest TVs and compatible devices are capable of streaming movies and TV shows at approximately 4000 pixels, blowing the previous 1080p resolution standard out of the water.

Director: Richie Smyth
Runtime: 1 hour 48 minutes
IMDb Rating: 7.3
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 60%

The historical drama war movie The Siege of Jadotville is based on the book The Siege at Jadotville: The Irish Army’s Forgotten Battle by Kevin Brodbin and recounts the events that happened in Congo in September 1961. The movie opens up with the assassination of the prime minister, which quickly leads to a civil war. But the already complicated and highly unstable political climate in Congo, some say, could lead to the beginning of World War III.

The movie focuses on Irish Commandant Pat Quinlan as he leads the battle against French and Belgian mercenaries. The Siege of Jadotville is one of the most intense 4k movies on Netflix not only because it’s a war movie, but because it tells the little-known story of the violent events that took place a little over 50 years ago in Congo.

3. What Happened, Miss Simone? (2015)

Release Date on Netflix: June 26, 2015
Director: Liz Garbus
Runtime: 50 min

Streaming on: Netflix US

This biographical/musical special tells the story of Nina Simone, a legendary recording artist and black power icon. She lived a life of musical genius inextricably intertwined with her brutal honesty. These were also enhanced by the deep melancholy she felt like an iconic African American artist and leader. The movie includes previously unreleased archival footage of performances, as well as interviews with Simone’s friends and daughter.

What Happened to Miss Simone? sets the standard for musical biographies that truly capture the essence of the artist, rather than reduce that essence to a tidy 60-minute film.

2. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend (2016)

Release Date on Netflix: February 8, 2016 (Hong Kong)
Director: Yuen Woo-ping
Runtime: 1h 45min
IMDb Rating: 6.1/10
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 19%
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Streaming on: Netflix US

In this sequel to the 2000 hit Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, famed warrior-maiden Shu Lien travels to Peking, to safeguard the legendary sword of her deceased lover. Shu Lien encounters rival warriors and old friends alike as she travels through forests, mountains, and villages in search for her dead lover’s weapon. Released worldwide on February 26, 2016, this martial arts film has received lukewarm reviews from critics. However, it will be a favorite among fans of the martial arts genre as well as fans of the original film from 2000.

Michelle Yeoh reprises her role as Shu Lien, yet surprisingly is the only actor in the film to do so. Though not quite as breathtaking as the original when it comes to cinematography or a romantic love story, this sequel packs twice as much punch when it comes to action, sure to please the fans of fast-paced martial arts action in one of the most enticing 4k movies on Netflix.

1. Groundhog Day (1993)

Release Date on Netflix: March 1st, 2015
Director: Harold Ramis
Runtime: 1 hour 41 minutes
IMDb Rating: 8
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 96%
MPAA Rating: PG
Streaming on: Netflix US, France, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Finland, and Brazil.

One of the most popular 4k movies on Netflix and, in our humble opinion, the best, Groundhog Day focuses on the famous February 2nd holiday that lets us know whether spring is just around the corner or six weeks away. The movie focuses on weatherman Phil Connors (played by Bill Murray) who is somehow caught in a time loop in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania after a blizzard hits the small town.

For the next few days, he wakes up to the same song on the radio, the announcement that “Groundhog Day” is here, and the same interactions with locals and coworkers. After realizing his actions are mostly consequence-free, Phil Connors first decides to indulge himself in hedonism and then attempts to commit suicide. But none of these work to get him out of the loop, so he needs to find other means of escaping the situation.
