American Horror Story changes its plot and world with each new season. While the plots are almost always extremely creepy, they also follow a classic horror trope with each different story. Several famous actors have appeared at least in a minor role in every season. Others have spanned two, three, or four. Those roles change, and it provides an additional eerie feeling to the series.
As for the tropes, season one follows a young family that has just moved into a big, strange house in a small town. That house, of course, is haunted by spirits and dark deeds of the past. The family deals with the horrors, and more than one twist flips the game.
Season two takes place in a twentieth century insane asylum called Briarcliff Manor. James Cromwell makes a guest appearance in this season as the twisted doctor in charge. Warped experiments and cruel treatments abound, as do secrets about the asylum’s past and its future.
The third season happens in the historically haunted city of New Orleans, and follows the deeds of a modern-day coven of witches. They have long-hidden mysteries and rivalries that spill over into the rest of the city. Who will succeed the coven mother and lead them into the twenty-first century?
Season four is called “Freak Show”. It is the story of a travelling troupe of performers and freaks during the end of their era of entertainment. Once again, the themes of characters’ pasts catching up with them abound, as do the supernatural and completely mundane evils that can haunt humanity.
The most recent completed season, number five, takes place in a California hotel with a dark, evil past. Ghosts and vampires both live within, and anyone who stays for even one night best beware. Even if they check out, in their minds, they can never really leave.
The sixth season takes place in a North Carolina home, in which a couple moves after deciding to leave Los Angeles. After strange happenings in the house, their daughter disappears and they struggle to find her. This season is called “Roanoke”.
Season seven, which will premiere on the 5th of September, 2017 is called “Cult” and it promises to be as exciting as the previous seasons. If you want to get a feel of the series, we invite you to take a look at the trailer for season 1.
