‘Marriage Story’

Marriage Story” stars Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver in a touching character-driven story from filmmaker Noah Brumback “The King” debuts on Netflix on December 1.

This dramedy explores the trials and tribulations of a coast-to-coast couple undergoing divorce. It’s a compassionate look at a couple struggling with their own dreams and finding it hard to maintain a relationship in the limelight with differing goals.

‘The Witcher,’ Season 1

Starring Henry Cavill (Superman, and “The Tudors”), this luxurious-looking new fantasy series is sure to be a fan favorite. It follows the story of Geralt of Rivia, monster hunter, as he navigates an uncertain world. It seems the humans he wants to save are often more evil than the monsters.

Geralt has supernatural powers to assist him, however, as he’s caught in a world between two human nations, peopled with elves and dwarves. Some critics are sure to compare this new series coming to Netflix in December 2019 with Game of Thrones. But we’re assured that it will have its own unique flavor.

The Witcher” hits the stream on December 20.

‘The Two Popes’

This biographical movie documents trouble in the Catholic Church and the surprising friendship between Pope Benedict XVI and future Pope Francis. “The Two Popes” stars Anthony Hopkins as Benedict and Jonathan Price as Francis.

In the story, it’s 2012, and Francis (then Cardinal Bergoglio), requests permission to retire from then-pope Benedict. Benedict summons Bergoglio to Rome, where secrets that could destroy the Church force the liberal Bergoglio and conservative Benedict to find common ground.

Notable Family Titles Added

With the winter holidays approaching, be prepared for plenty of family-friendly titles coming to Netflix in December 2019.

‘Lost in Space,’ Season 2

Nothing says Christmas like a family lost and floundering in the unknown universe. In fact, the new season of “Lost in Space” will perfectly fill that winter break gap from school.

It looks exciting, and fans are happy to learn that the original surviving cast and crew of The Jupiter 2 is set to return. But in Season 2, their beloved Robot is missing, so returning to the Resolute might be more difficult than they thought.

Look for 10 new episodes starting on December 24.

‘A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby’ (2019)

Do you remember 2017, when Netflix teased its own viewers about their binging habits?

A quick refresher – on December 10, 2017, social media staff at the streaming network called out 53 of their subscribers for watching “A Christmas Prince” every day for 18 days in a row:

Netflix teases its viewers on TwitterThey can tease, but something about this somewhat basic, cheesy holiday romance story hit hard with audiences. So, 2018 saw “The Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding.” And now coming to Netflix in December 2019, naturally, is “The Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby.”

These wholesome and hokey movies are like Twinkies for the brain, and fans love it!

Last Chance to Watch on Netflix in December 2019

Probably more shocking that what’s coming to Netflix in December 2019 is what’s leaving. We’re shocked and dismayed by the loss of old standbys that we’ve returned to time after time.

Notable Titles Leaving Netflix in December 2019

If you haven’t had a chance to see these notable movies and television shows on Netflix, now’s your last chance.

Here are a few notable titles to watch before they leave the stream.

‘BBC Earth Series’

The BBC Earth series is a collection of stunning, high-definition nature documentaries. Narrated by Sir David Attenborough, they feature various aspects of our natural world and the wonder found within.

The latest installment of the series, “Blue Planet II” won a 2018 BAFTA for its “must-see” TV moments. “Planet Earth,” from 2006, won four Emmys.

Other BBC Earth series” include “Frozen Planet,” “Life Story,” and more.

While the Netflix Original documentary with Sir Attenborough, “Our Planet,” will remain on the service, frankly, it’s nowhere as majestic as the BBC series nor as well-written.

The series leaves Netflix on December 3, with no news yet where it will appear next.

‘Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown,’ Seasons 7-11

This landmark food and travel series starring the much-mourned Anthony Bourdain is leaving Netflix in December.

Most notably, it was Bourdain’s final series before his death. This smart and thought-provoking series shows Bourdain traveling to the world’s most interesting corners and sharing his unique perspective on their food and culture.

Netflix still has plenty of food and travel shows, but nothing will replace Anthony Bourdain. “Parts Unknown” was more than a food show – it was like hanging out with your favorite “cool” teacher.
