Castle is a hit series that aired on ABC from 2009 to 2016. Mystery novelist Richard Castle, played by Firefly’s Nathan Fillion, teams up with NYPD Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) after a series of murders were found to be re-creations of scenes from his novels. Although Detective Beckett is not happy about working with a writer, Castle’s creative skills prove useful in solving murders. Castle and Beckett’s personalities clash, but eventually, romantic tension develops between the unlikely pair.
After season 8, Stana Katic, as well and Tamala Jones, who played medical examiner Dr. Lanie Parish, were let go. The reason given for this decision was that the show had to save money, but fans were outraged and thought it was sexist to fire two well-loved female characters. There was also quite a bit of friction off-screen between the two leads, Katic and Fillion. They even tried to repair their off-screen relationship through couples counseling.
Castle was set to return for season 9, contracts signed and all. However, soon after the uproar by fans over Katic’s firing, ABC cancelled the show. ABC president, Channing Dungey, explained that they didn’t think it was right. The last episode aired on May, 16, 2016.
Nathan Fillion was recently cast in season 2 of the Netflix Original A Series of Unfortunate Events, which is based on the children’s novel of the same name. He also made some guest appearances in Santa Clarita Diet, Rick & Morty, and Broklyn Nine-Nine. Katic is set to play FBI agent Emily Byrne in a new crime thriller series, Absentia, airing later this year. She is also starring in an upcoming horror thriller film, Cadaver, set to be released in 2018.
