Shameless is an Americanized remake of a British family-based comedic drama that originally aired on the BBC. It revolves around the life of an alcoholic patriarch of a family of six children, Frank Gallagher (William H. Macy). His drinking drove their mother away a long time ago, and the children are mostly left to manage themselves. The show has recently completed its seventh season, and the eight season will premiere on Showtime in November of 2017. But is Shameless on Netflix as well? This is what we’ll find out in this article.
Release Date on Netflix: 2015
Director: Paul Abbott
Runtime: 46 minutes
IMDb Rating: 8.7

With their mother gone and their father in a drunken stupor, the six Gallagher children are very much on their own. Even though the eldest sister tries to provide guidance, she is torn between responsibility to her family and a desire to find her own way in life, and maybe even a little romance.
While Fiona (Emmy Rossum) has her own problems to deal with, so do the other five siblings. Phillip (Jeremy Allen White) is extremely intelligent but not very motivated to use its intelligence. He goes through a string of schemes, girlfriends, and bad choices throughout the series. Ian (Cameron Monaghan) it the third child, interested in joining the army, not really Frank’s biologically. He is also gay and hiding it from some of the family.
Debbie (Emma Kenney) is the fourth child, very mature, and doing everything she can to get noticed. Carl (Ethan Cutkosky) is the fifth born, and he shares a room with his much older brothers, who try to keep their more adult pursuits away from him. Liam (Brennan Kane Johnson and Blake Alexander Johnson, then Brenden Sims and Brandon Sims) is the youngest, and born black because of a recessive gene in Frank’s family history.
While often considered a comedy, and it does have its comedic moments, the entire series also has a very serious tone. It deals with issues like race, homosexuality, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, and other challenging subjects, and many times the characters do not deal with the situations in the most positive of ways, either for themselves or anyone else involved. At times, the family appears to have a desire for self-destruction.
At the same time, however, it is a family that sticks together, suffers together, and laughs together. The performances throughout are fantastic, even those by some of the minor characters. Hollywood legend Joan Cusack makes a regular appearance as family friend Sheila Jackson, delivering a wonderful portrayal of a manic germophobe.
The promo trailer for Shameless season 1 paints a really great picture of the tone and comedy of this family story.
