One of the longest running and most influential adult animated comedies of the last two decades, South Park was created originally in 1993 by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. It premiered on Comedy Central, and has been a mainstay for the twenty seasons since. The plots are often insane, and revolve around the misadventures of 4 kids in a sleepy mountain town in Colorado, Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Kenny McCormick, and Eric Cartman. First, let’s find out more about this highly influential series, and then we will answer the question “Is South Park on Netflix?”

Considered one of the most influential and controversial comedies of all time, there are few issues of social and popular culture that South Park has not addressed in one of their 282 episodes. There was even a feature length film, “South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut”, that was released in theaters to a good box office and rave reviews from critics.
Starting with our four heroes in third grade, the series follows them on impossible adventures from alien abduction to fighting a giant, mechanical dinosaur named after Barbara Streisand. They get lost in a jungle, fight terrorists in the Middle East, and stop a war between the United States and Canada. Throughout all of it, there is a foul mouthed, irreverent humor that skewers everything from political dictators and religion, to plastic surgery, superheroes, and “Lord of the Rings”.
Stan and Kyle are the main protagonists, with Kenny the poor boy, and the eternally curmudgeonly Cartman. Stan is the classic American boy next door, and Kyle is his Jewish friend who deals with the world in a more philosophical way.
Kenny died in every episode for the first dozen seasons, and then from time to time thereafter, always to reappear at the start of each episode as if nothing had happened. Cartman is a horrible child, an anti-semite, a racist, an antagonist, and entirely despotic, and he regularly gets his comeuppance. He’s the friend you hate, but still cannot get rid of, and often, deep down, he knows how wrong he is.
There is a wide cast of secondary characters, including occasional cameo appearances by well known stars. George Clooney, Cheech and Chong, Jennifer Aniston, and Jay Leno are just a few, though most celebrities are impersonated by one of the main voice actors, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Music legend Isaac Hayes played the early character Chef, who left the show during a controversy in 2005.
One of the most important aspects of South Park is its use of music. There are multiple episodes that appear as musicals, including quite a few original songs in the feature film.
The original season one promo shows how primitive the early episodes really were. The animation improved as the show continued, though it eventually became a joke the series made about itself.
Is South Park on Netflix?
While the entire series once streamed on Netflix, the current contracts between Comedy Central and Hulu prevent it from being available there, except on DVD, which is is an additional charge to the regular Netflix streaming service. The show is unlikely to stream through Netflix any time soon.
South Park is one of the most influential and controversial comedies in American history. It has hundreds of episodes that address issues of popular and political culture, and media. It is well worth a try if you have a taste for irreverent humor.
