The first season of Jessica Jones on Netflix consisted of 13 episodes following the protagonist’s process of setting up her own private detective agency after her superhero career was cut short by a mysterious, tragic event.
Jessica Jones was primarily filmed in New York City, with the gritty depiction of Hell’s Kitchen inspired by Alias, the original Marvel comic that serves as the source material for the series. Another key member of the Jessica Jones Netflix cast is Luke Cage, an invincible hero with superhuman strength, is portrayed by Mike Colton. Both Colton and Ritter gained substantial muscle for their roles (30 pounds and 10 pounds respectively).
Other characters in the Jessica Jones cast include Jones’ adoptive sister, Trish Walker, portrayed by Rachael Taylor; Will Simpson, a serious NYPD sergeant played by Will Traval; Erin Moriarty as a client of Jones’ agency, Alias Investigations; Eka Darville as Jones’ neighbor who like her, is struggling with addiction recovery; Carrie-Anne Moss as an attorney who also hires Jones; and David Tennant as a dangerous, mind-controlling villain from Jones’ superhero days.
Created in 2001, Alias was designated as part of the Marvel Max line for its depictions of sex and violence, and Jessica Jones continues to push that envelope. However, the challenging subject matter is offset by the witty dialogue and quick pacing. As the viewer learns about the trauma Tennant’s character unleashed upon Jones in her superhero days, a story of trust and redemption unfolds in the Jessica Jones Netflix series.
A second season of 13 episodes was ordered by Netflix in January 2016 and began filming in April 2017 for a 2018 release. While few plot details are available for the upcoming season as of yet, Screen Rant reports that the show will continue to go in a “dark and heavy” direction.
