When it premiered on ABC in 2009, Modern Family was very cutting edge due to the themes it portrayed on American network television. One of the main story lines revolved around the fact that two gay men were married. One of the men, Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), is the son of conservative, high school football hero and family patriarch Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neill). He and his husband, Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet), even have a daughter they have adopted.

Meanwhile, Jay is conflicted himself, as he is newly married to Gloria (Sofia Vergara), a Colombian immigrant who is far younger than he is. He has also taken in her son, Manny (Rico Rodriguez), son of baseball player Javier Delgado (Benjamin Bratt).

And then there are the Dunphys. Claire (Julie Bowen), Jay’s daughter, is married to Phil (Ty Burrell). With their three kids: Haley (Sarah Hyland), Alex (Ariel Winter), and Luke (Nolan Gould), they provide much of the heart of the show.

The comedy revolves around the relationships of family, and whether modernity, both social and technological, changes them, or they can overcome the differences between generations. Within the seven seasons of shows, they go through many ups and downs, but the core of the family sticks together, trusts each other, and loves each other.

The show won a Golden Globe, and it has been nominated for many Emmys and other awards. It has received mostly approving reviews from critics, and it is a mainstay of current ABC programming, moving ahead with no end in sight.

Modern Family on Netflix

Unfortunately, Modern Family is no longer streaming on Netflix. It is available by season, however, through their DVD rental service, which is only a minor additional charge to their normal streaming service. Getting it is a simple process, and return postage is already paid. While you can’t watch Modern Family on Netflix per se, you can rent it from them.

Conclusion

The long running television series Modern Family has tackled many issues with humor and grace, lending well to the show’s name. It tries to address issues related to how a modern family operates, and how each generation is both different and similar at the same time. While there are other streaming services that carry Modern Family, you can’t watch Modern Family on Netflix unless you pay for the extra DVD rental service.
