How to Personalize Your Netflix Account Settings
Netflix is one of the most versatile streaming solutions in the world. It’s also one of the most personal. Each user has the option to optimize their Netflix account settings to reflect their tastes better. Even though Netflix has cut the size of its streaming library in half over the past few years; they’ve more than made up for it by allowing users to create personalized profiles.
From custom subtitles options and advanced communications settings to data usage, personalized lists and accessing dozens of hidden genres, there aren’t many streaming services offering such a unique user experience as Netflix. Whether you’re a long time user or are a brand new subscriber, you can easily unleash your personality and get the most out of your streaming service by adjusting your Netflix account settings.
Personalize Your Netflix Account Settings
Personalizing your Netflix account settings is one of the best ways to optimize your user experience. Netflix account settings can be personalized in various manners. Including setting up multiple profiles, arranging your list order to better suit your tastes, tweaking playback options and so much more.
Here are a few of the most beneficial adjustments you can make to your Netflix account settings for creating a more personalized version of Netflix for your enjoyment.
Multiple profiles
Creating multiple profiles can be beneficial for those who have multiple people living under one roof. Whether it’s just you and your spouse, or if you have children, or other family members living with you, multiple profiles will make a huge difference in all of your individual Netflix experiences.
Without using more than one profile, your personalized list order will be based on the entire households tastes and their combined viewing history. That means, if you have kids, your profile will likely be filled with cartoons. Creating multiple profiles not only allows each adult in the house to preserve their list order, but it also allows them to moderate what children can access as well.
To create multiple profiles, scroll down and click on “my profile,” select “manage profiles,” pick “add profile” and enter a name. Remember to mark the checkbox labeled “kid?” if the new profile is for a child. That will keep programs above a PG rating hidden from them. Click “continue,” and now you’re done.
Communication settings
For those who wish to stay updated on all the latest Netflix platform related news, tweaking the communication settings is a must. Including essential system updates, recently released content like the newest TV shows and movies, surveys, special offers, and even more.
To do this, scroll to “settings,” click on “communication,” and put a mark in the checkboxes that you would like to receive emails about. Finally, when you’ve checked the boxes, click “update” to save.
Parental controls
Adjusting the parental controls on your Netflix account settings is one of the most useful tweaks you can make when you have kids. Doing so allows you to monitor the sort of material your children can access. To do this, scroll down to “settings” and click on “parental controls.” You’ll be prompted to create a password in the form of a four-digit PIN. Then, select the level of PIN protection from the four main options: little kids, older kids, teens, and adults.
After you’ve adjusted your parental controls, anytime someone tries to access programs above the selected protection level, they will need to have the PIN code to proceed.
Custom subtitles
If you are multi-lingual or spend a fair amount of time watching foreign films, customizing subtitles is an excellent step to personalizing your Netflix account settings. You can adjust subtitles in several ways, including font style, size, and color.
To fix this, scroll to “settings” and click on “subtitle.” You will be prompted to choose from seven font styles and several colors. You will need to choose from small, medium and large font sizes as well. Also, there are a handful of extra options to further personalize your subtitles including various shadow options and different backgrounds.
While you are playing around with these settings, a preview will show up at the top of the screen. Once you have found the settings that you like the best, click “save” and you’re finished.
Your list order
The order of your list determines which sort of TV shows and movies you can see. You can allow Netflix to decide this order for you, based on what you’ve watched and searched for, or you can create the order of your list manually.
To put your list in order, scroll down to “settings” and click on “order” in “my list.” Put a mark in the “manual ordering” box, or Netflix suggests, and then click “save.” If you selected Netflix suggests, you’re finished. However, if you chose “manual ordering,” you will need to follow a couple more steps.
To manually order your list, click on the arrow next to “browse,” on the top of the page, and then click on “my list.” Finally, click and then drag and drop any TV shows or movies that you’d like to add to your list. If you add something by accident or change your mind, click on the X and it’s removed from your list. You can also move something to the top of your list by clicking on “move” to the top.
Mobile settings
Adjusting your mobile Netflix account settings, though not nearly as in-depth as the web-based settings options, is another great way to personalize your mobile streaming experience.
To do so, open the menu on your Android or iOS device, scroll to the bottom, and click on “app settings.” There you will find data usage and video quality settings. For those using Android devices, they will also find notifications settings.
Data usage options include Wi-Fi only, low, medium, high, and unlimited. Video quality options include standard, with less storage, and higher, with more storage. The notification option found on Android devices allows you to receive push notifications about updates, suggestions and other notices.
Accessing hidden genres
One of the most refreshing ways to optimize your Netflix is to locate the slew of secret service codes. Most Netflix users seem to be completely unaware that these hidden genres even exist. These codes allow access to material which is otherwise inaccessible from the main menu. No matter your taste, there is something for everyone.
If you like horror, there are genres like Zombie Horror (75405), Monster Movies (947), and Horror Comedy (89585). For those who are family oriented, try choosing a wholesome film from the Family Features (51056) genre. Do you like romances? Give Romantic Favorites (502675) a shot. Best Dramas based on Books (4961), Mockumentaries (26), Supernatural Thrillers (11140), Gangster Movies (31851) are some of the other genres.
Intrigued? You can find an extensive list of these codes on the Netflix Hidden Codes website.
Data Settings
Streaming TV shows and movies on Netlifx consumes around 1 GB of data every hour. High definition video requires closer to 3 GB of data per hour. So, if you need to set a limit for your bandwidth usage, you can tweak your data settings.
You will have the option of low (.03 GB per hour), medium (0.7 GB per hour), high (3 GB HD per hour and 7 GB UHD per hour), and auto (Auto-adjusting for the best quality streaming possible depending on your internet connection).
First, sign into your Netflix account settings and choose which profile you want to make changes to. Then, click on your Netflix account settings under “my profile.” Finally, select “playback settings” and then select the data usage settings which best suits your needs and click “save.” It can take up to eight hours for your new settings to start working.
Updating Your Account
Life is full of changes, and from time to time you’ll need to modify your information. To do so, sign in to the Netflix website and click the settings link on your account page and then follow the prompts. If you experience difficulties while updating your information, follow the troubleshooting steps.
Whether you’ve changed email addresses, bank accounts or credit cards, phone numbers or even physical addresses, you need to update your Netflix account settings accordingly as soon as possible. It’s simple and only takes a couple of minutes, so why wait? Avoid missing out on essential notifications or missing a payment resulting in account discontinuation.

I never set up my Netflix account during the trial period as I apparently do not have a “Smart” TV but a dumb one. I called previously to cancel same, but just got a notice that they need to bill me. Please contact me via e-mail to resolve.
