The story of adult Superman is pretty well-known, from his time at the Daily Planet, to his involvement with the Justice League, and his battles with enemies from every corner of space and time. Seldom, though, do we learn much about his youth in the town of Smallville, Kansas. Smallville examines this, and it does so with a lot of modern drama, while still being true to the original character. Let’s look at the series itself, and then see if a Smallville Netflix archive is available.
Release Date on Netflix: Only on DVD

At ten seasons, Smallville is one of the longest running North American science fiction shows of all time. The familiar characters from the original comics are present: Superman/Clark Kent (Tom Welling), Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk), Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum), and Superman’s adoptive parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent (John Schneider and Annette O’Toole).
Most of the initial plot lines cover young Clark coming to terms with his alien nature, occasionally communicating through the remains of his spaceship with the memories of his father, Jor’El (Terence Stamp). He is trying to fit in in a small town, something hard to do even when you are completely normal. At the same time, Lex Luthor is finding conflict with his powerful, industrialist father Lionel Luthor (John Glover).
Over the course of the show’s seasons, young Superman faces many threats, including villains created by exposure to kryptonite, both overt and covert power grabs by Lex Luthor and his father, and the old enemy of Superman’s father, Major Zod. He also encounters both Lois Lane (Erica Durance) and Jimmy Olsen (Aaron Ashemore) who usually appear later in Superman’s life. Even one of his future allies from the Justice league, the Green Arrow/Oliver Queen (Justin Hartley), makes a regular appearance throughout the series.
The show is set in modern days, so some of the themes also follow the experiences of young people coming of age. At times, it has a high school drama feel as much as a science fiction or superhero story feel. That lends well to the overall approachability of this series, and it helps attract a younger demographic, which may not have identified as well with the original picture of the flawless Superman.
The show won 3 prime time Emmys during its run, as well as several other awards for production and writing. It inspired a cult following, a series of graphic novels, and a lot of cosplay. The original trailer gives you a sense of the entire show.
Is Smallville on Netflix?
Right now, Smallville Netflix streaming is only available via Netflix’s DVD rental service, for an extra charge that subscribers can add to their account. Even though The CW has an agreement to bring many of its current DC Universe shows directly to Netflix, that does not include older shows like Smallville.
Whether it will be added in the future is uncertain, as Netflix seems to be trending towards newer and more original content, rather than classic series.
Smallville was a fun, creative adaptation of the classic Superman story for a younger, more modern generation. With ten seasons, it is one of the longest running shows of its kind. While a Smallville Netflix marathon is not possible online, the DVDs can be ordered by season on Netflix. With 217 total episodes, there is a lot of content for you to go through in your spare time.
