While not as popular as American movies, Spanish movies can be just as good. However, subtitles and the Spanish language may deter some from enjoying a large number of masterpieces. Despite this fact, there are still enough people that want to know if they can watch Spanish movies on Netflix.

The answer is, of course, yes. But even if you just want to improve your language skills, you still want to watch a good movie. And without expertise, it’s quite difficult to do so. So, today we are going to talk about the best Spanish movies on Netflix. We did our best to keep the list objective, but some personal favorites might have snuck in there.

9. El Orfanato (2007)

Soon after moving in, her adoptive son starts having invisible friends. Still, she throws a party after opening the orphanage, and her son goes missing. Will the parapsychologists she calls over be able to solve the mystery?

Directed by J.A. Bayona, this thrilling drama is one of the best Spanish movies on Netflix. It was written by Sergio G. Sánchez, and stars Belén Rueda, Fernando Cayo, and Roger Príncep. Very successful upon its release, this film shines in multiple areas. The cinematography, acting, and writing are all worth the watch.

8. Güeros (2014)

Despite being made in 2014, Güeros is filmed entirely in black and white. While it may seem like a strange direction for the year, the idea was certainly a success. Directed by Alonso Ruizpalacios, the movie was written by Gibrán Portela and Ruizpalacios himself. It stars Tenoch Huerta, Isle Salas, and Sebastián Aguirre.

After Tomas gets in trouble for the umpteenth time, his mother has had enough. So, she sends him to live in Mexico City with his brother, Federico. Also known as Sombra, Federico makes a huge impact on Tomas’ life. Approaching subjects rarely seen in modern filmmaking, Güeros is one of the best Mexican comedies in years. It is also one of the best movies in Spanish on Netflix.

7. No se Aceptan Devoluciones (2013)

One of the strangest, yet most heartwarming family tales seen in recent times, Instructions not Included is a special flick. Valentin is forced to relinquish his playboy lifestyle after finding a baby girl on his doorstep. Raising the girl for a few years, Valentin becomes more grounded and grown up. Their special relationship, however, is threatened by the sudden reappearance of the child’s mother.

A very fun and compelling dramedy, No se Aceptan Devoluciones was directed by Eugenio Derbez. The movie stars Eugenio Derbez, Karla Souza, Jessica Lindsey, and Arcelia Ramírez. It is one of the best Spanish movies on Netflix, and certainly one of the best recent dramedies.

The movie was nominated for one Oscar, and received another sixty wins and eighty nominations. It’s one of the best Netflix movies in Spanish, and it keeps you glued to the screen for its entirety.

After Raimunda’s and Sole’s mother dies in their native village, the two sisters return for a visit. With them, Raimunda brings her daughter, Paula. Over the course of the movie, the tone changes several times. It approaches topics such as rape, murder, family, duty, respect, responsibility, and hiding bodies.

Y Tu Mamá También is one of the best movies made by legendary director Alfonso Cuarón. It was co-written by Alfonso and his brother, Carlos Cuarón. The film stars Maribel Verdú, Gael García Bernal, Daniel Giménez Cacho, Ana López Mercado, Diego Luna, Verónica Langer, and others. This journey of discovery is one of the best Spanish movies on Netflix.

In their attempts to impress an older woman, Tenoch and Julio make up a story about going to a beach. They present la Boca del Cielo as one of the most beautiful secret beaches in the world. But there is one issue with their plan – the beach doesn’t exist. Now, as Luisa decides to join them on their trip, they have to figure out how to continue their holiday.

4. Hable con Ella (2002)

Rated R for rough language, sexual content, and nudity, Hable con Ella (Talk to Her) is definitely worth a watch.

Benigno and Marco are two men who run into each other twice – at the theatre and at a private clinic. Both of them are taking care of loved ones in a coma. Benigno is taking care of Alicia, a young ballet student. Meanwhile, Marco is looking after his comatose bullfighter girlfriend. The lives of our four characters intertwine towards an unexpected, unsuspected destiny.

Spanish movies on Netflix are a dime a dozen but good Spanish movies on Netflix are much rarer. Amores Perros is definitely one of the latter. It was directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and written by Guillermo Arriaga. The thrilling drama stars Emilio Echevarría, Gael García Bernal, Goya Toledo, Álvaro Guerrero, Vanessa Bauche, and many others.

All of them traced back to a fatal car crash, three different stories are intertwined in Mexico City. On one end, Octavio is trying to run away with his sister-in-law. To get the money he needs, he decides to enter his dog in a dogfighting competition. After a fight goes wrong, he flees the scene, and runs a red light. This accident he causes implicates a homeless man which cares for strays, and overturns the lives of a happy couple.

Written by Alejandro Amenábar and Mateo Gil, Mar Adentro (The Sea Inside), is one of the best Spanish Netflix movies. Also directed by Amenábar, the movie stars Javier Bardem, Belén Rueda, Lola Dueñas, Mabel Rivera, and Celso Bugallo. And it’s one of the best Spanish movies ever made.

Based on a true tale, the movie tells the story of Ramón Sampedro. Unable to move and trapped in a wheelchair, Ramón fought for the right to end his own life. He did so for thirty years, and along the way, he managed to move everyone around him. Most noteworthy, the movie explores his relationship with two women. One of them is a lawyer attempting to help him win the case. Meanwhile, the other is a local attempting to convince him that life is worth living.

Also known as Pan’s Labyrinth, this is perhaps one of the best Spanish movies of all time. So, it is certainly one of the best Spanish movies on Netflix. Directed and written by Guillermo del Toro, Pan’s Labyrinth is a fantasy war drama without equal. It stars Ivana Baquero, Sergi López, Maribel Verdú, Doug Jones, Ariadna Gil, Álex Angulo, and many others.

Taking place in 1994’s Spain during the reign of Francisco Franco, the movie is a fantasy war fairytale. After her mother remarries a ruthless captain, Ofelia meets a fairy who tells her she’s a princess. In order to prove her nobility, however, she must first survive three grueling tasks. I will not go into any more details so as not to spoil the movies, but it’s worth a watch.
