A while back, Westerns used to be what superhero movies are today. One big difference was that they were a lot cheaper to make. They were often made by Italian directors, so they became commonly referred to as spaghetti westerns, and the whole country loved them. Below, you can find the best Westerns on Netflix.

For this list, we made our own algorithm, based on several criteria. Some of these criteria were the IMDb and the Rotten Tomatoes scores. A nostalgic factor also managed to sneak its way into our ratings. So, don’t be surprised if you won’t find all your favorite Netflix Westerns here.

16. The Daughter of Dawn (1920)

The Daughter of Dawn is a restored silent film that recounts the events that took place around a Kiowa chief’s daughter and the conflicts caused by a love triangle in which she was involved. It’s a movie with a huge historical significance which is said to be made by, with, and for Indians.

What’s interesting about this movie is the fact that it disappeared soon after its production was completed, before any big screenings, and mysteriously reappeared perfectly preserved years later. Although in the last place in our top, it’s one of the best western movies on Netflix that tells the story from the Native American perspective.

When Ham stumbles home barely alive after a confrontation with the gang, Jane sees no option than to contact her former lover Dan Frost (Joel Edgerton) and ask for his help.

Jane’s battle for her family’s survival is peppered with old memories and challenges from the relentless leader of the gang, Colin. It’s one of the western movies on Netflix that will keep you on the edge of your seat for over an hour and a  half.

The story of Meek’s Cutoff takes place in 1845, in the early days of the Oregon Trail. Stephen Meek (Bruce Greenwood) is a mountain man who is hired by three families to help them pass through the Cascade Mountains. He leads them through a shortcut and just as they reach the high plain desert of the area, he disappears without a trace.

The three families now have to survive the rough living conditions of the area by themselves and are facing hunger and thirst just as they cross paths with a Native American who might be able to help them if they give him the chance.

In 1870’s American West, Jon Jensen – a European settler played by Mads Mikkelsen – is shown welcoming his family to the new land. But their happiness doesn’t last long as a group of outlaws kidnaps and murders his wife and son; naturally, Jon seeks and gets revenge on those who caused him immense suffering.

But what he doesn’t know is that one of the outlaws was the brother of local land baron Henry Delarue, who now wants justice for his brother’s death and everybody in town is too afraid of him to protect Jon. Definitely one of the most interesting Westerns on Netflix and one of our favorite thanks to how well Mads plays his part!

After a 20-year-old conflict erupts, Jim and Jessica are caught in the middle of it and see their relationship challenged. One of the most romantic westerns on Netflix at the moment!

You probably wonder why the 2010 remake is on the list instead of the original 1969 John Wayne version. Well, the former is simply the better movie. Directed and written by Ethan and Joel Coen, True Grit stars Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Hailee Steinfeld, and Josh Brolin. Along with Django Unchained, it’s one of the best Westerns on Netflix to come out this decade.

After her father is murder by a hired hand, 14-year-old Mattie Ross decides to leave her farm searching for revenge. She hires the toughest U.S. marshal she can find, Reuben J. “Rooster” Cogburn, to capture her father’s killer. They are joined by LaBoeuf, a Texas ranger who wants the killer for his own reasons. Along their journey, their true grit will be tested.

This 1956 Western was directed by John Ford and written by Alan Le May and Frank S. Nugent. It stars the unforgettable John Wayne, as well as Jeffrey Hunter, Vera Miles, Ward Bond, and Natalie Wood. One of those Westerns on Netflix which will blow your mind, The Searchers is a true epic.

After Ethan Edwards returns to Texas from the Civil War, he plans to start his life over. However, a group of Comanche Indians led by Chief Scar destroys those plans and kidnap his niece. He starts a long journey in search of the kidnappers, along with his nephew, Martin. As the years pass, Martin begins to suspect that his uncle’s hatred might lead to something other than a rescue.

One of the good Westerns on Netflix, it deals with themes such as honor, friendship, change, progress, and righteous rage.

One of the most critically acclaimed Western movies on Netflix, The Wild Bunch focuses on a group of outlaws. As time passes and the world changes around them, the friends find themselves trapped in their fantasies. Just like the unstoppable passage of time, their lives head towards an inevitable and brutal conclusion.

This is the first Clint Eastwood entry on this list, and you know it won’t be the last. A Fistful of Dollars was directed by Sergio Leone, one of the best spaghetti Western directors of all time. It stars Clint Eastwood, Gian Maria Volontè, Marianne Koch, Wolfgang Lukschy, Sieghardt Rupp, and other Western legends. It’s not just one of the best Westerns on Netflix, but one of the best Clint Eastwood movies.

If you’re not familiar with this Western classic, it’s one of the few which started the whole trend. A Western town is torn asunder because of two feuding gangs’ rivalry. After an anonymous man rides into the town, he decides to take it back for the people. So, he starts using the Baxters and the Rojos against each other, all the while getting rich in the process.

One of the most watched Westerns on Netflix, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid stars Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Katharine Ross, Strother Martin, and others. It won four Oscars and another sixteen awards.

Based on the true adventures of two of the most notorious outlaws to ever live, the movie follows the leaders of the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang as they journey through America. After robbing one too many trains, the two start running away from a posse assembled just for them. Will Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid make it to Bolivia?

It stars Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, Richard Harris, Jaimz Woolvett, Saul Rubinek, Frances Fisher, Anna Levine, and others. With four Oscars and another 36 wins and 29 nominations, Unforgiven deserves to be on this list of the best Western movies on Netflix.

Set in the town of Big Whiskey, Unforgiven blurs the lines of heroism and villainy. After a prostitute is murdered by cowboys in the town, justice fails to satisfy her friends. So, they put a bounty on the murderer’s head. This draws in a very dangerous crowd, one that will stop at nothing to get the reward.

4. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is the second oldest entry on this list of Westerns on Netflix. This 1948 Western adventure was written and directed by John Huston and stars Humphrey Bogart, Walter Hudson, Tim Holt, Bruce Bennett, Barton MacLane, Alfonso Bedoya, and many other ‘40s actors. It’s one of the best black and white Westerns ever made.

Taking place in 1925’s Tampico, Mexico, the movie tells the story of Bob Curtin and Fred C. Dobbs. Down on their luck, the two decide to join a prospector in his search for gold. But finding the gold won’t be the most difficult task they face. Bandits, the unpredictability of weather, and greed, all threaten to stop the journey short of their destination.

3. Django Unchained (2012)

Quentin Tarantino’s 2012 foray into Westerns ended up being one of the writer and director’s most successful production. Django Unchained stars Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington, Walton Goggins, and other talented actors. And despite only coming out four years ago, it’s one of the best Westerns on Netflix of all time.

Django, a slave, has his freedom bought by former-dentist-turned-bounty-hunter, Dr. King Schultz. Wanting to have him as a deputy bounty hunter, Schultz trains him for a few years. During this time, Django turns out to be a natural Grade-A marksman. Eventually, the two try to save Django’s wife, held by a cruel plantation owner named Calvin Candie.

This masterpiece is not just one of the best Westerns on Netflix, but one of the best ever made.

After young Mrs. McBain moves to Utah, she finds her entire family dead. The scene looked like a slaughter, but who committed the horrible murders? A notorious desperado and a stranger with a harmonica join forces to solve the mystery and avenge the murders.

It stars Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach, Lee Van Cleef, Aldo Giuffrè, Luigi Pistilli, and other Western movie legends. Plus, it’s almost unanimously seen as the best Western of all time.

One of the best Westerns on Netflix, the movie tells a tale of partnership and betrayal. Without spoiling too much, Blondie and Tuco are partners and bounty hunters. After they go through a rough patch, the two have to stay together in order to find a buried treasure. During all this, they have to be on the lookout for Angel Eyes, a notorious hitman.
